CHAPEL HILL Joe Weinberger finished fifth overall
by shooting a 38 for nine holes as the Person High School
golf team placed fifth overall as well in the season-opening
Piedmont Athletic Conference match Monday afternoon at the
Chapel Hill Country Club.
East Chapel Hill was the host team on Monday, and the Wildcats
ended up tied for first place with Northern Durham. Both teams
finished with a score of 148.
Chapel Hill was third with a 154, Riverside placed fourth
at 158, and the Rockets were a distant fifth at 171.
Person coach Mark Lunsford said his teams long game
was solid, but the performance around the greens needs improvement.
Weve got a lot of work to do on our short game,
he said. The putting surfaces on the Chapel Hill course
were fast and we really struggled. Our ball striking was good
but weve got to finish better.
Along with Joe Weinbergers team-leading 38, Brice Mitchell
shot a 42 and James Weinberger carded a 44 for the Rockets,
who also got a 47 from Zeb Barnette.
Rounding out the team finishes on Monday were Jordan in sixth
with a 185, Hillside in seventh, and Southern Durham in eighth.
Top individual finishers were ECHs Aheem Raham in first
with a 33, ECHs Eric Park and Northerns Stratten
Waldt tied for second at 35, and a three-way tie at 36 between
Dalton Rich of Northern, Jack Garrett of Riverside, and Dana
Spitz of Chapel Hill.
Person is in action again today when it takes on Bartlett
Yancey at the Roxboro Country Club (2 p.m. scheduled start).
