The Person junior varsity baseball team opened the 2008 season with two losses last week.

In their season opener against Oxford Webb last Thursday at home, the Rockets fell by a 16-3 count.

Nate McBroom was the starting pitcher and took the loss. Ed Thornburg went 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, while Tyler Cothran (1-for-2, RBI) and Brandon Napier (1-for-1 with a walk and a run scored) also contributed offensively.

Last Friday, Person hosted Cedar Ridge and ended up on the short side of a 12-3 final.

The game was tied at three entering the fourth inning before the Red Wolves scored the final nine runs to grab the victory.

Thornburg, who had two steals in the game, was the losing pitcher.

Rich Whitfield went 1-for-2, walked twice, stole a base, scored and drove in a run, while Cothran had two hits, walked once, and scored.

The 0-2 JV Rockets have a makeup of Tuesday’s rainout at South Granville today at 4 p.m., and are scheduled to play at Webb on Friday.
