The Person Rocket track and field teams lost to East Chapel Hill Wednesday afternoon at Person High School.

The boys earned sweeps in both the 110 hurdles and 100-meter dash and notched seven first-place finishes overall in a close 75-71 defeat, while the girls also captured seven firsts in an 80-58 loss to the Wildcats.

Person’s Ahmad Arthur grabbed first places in the 110 hurdles (17.4 time) and the 300-hurdle event (45.30 time). Devon Smith (19.01) and Malcolm Hinton placed second and third in the 110s and Smith took second in the 300 event.

Zach Dawkins won the 400-meter race, finishing in 55.47, followed by Will Reynolds in third with a 58.15.

Trey Thomas was victorious in the 100 with an 11.63. Chavon Burton (11.78) and Woody Timmons (11.93) finished second and third.

James Thorpe’s 23.21 was good enough for a first in the 200 meters, and Walter Majors finished with a first in the triple jump (36 feet, 3 inches), the long jump (18-7) and the high jump (5-6). Tyler O’Hara ended up third in the high jump with an effort of 5-4.

Donte Cameron scored in the discus and shot put. He had a throw of over 110 feet to win the discus and a toss of 37-8 for a second-place showing in the shot. Termain Scoggins was runner-up on the discus with a throw of over 106 feet.

In the girls’ meet, Person’s Ebonee Taylor qualified for the regionals with a 26-second, first-place time in the 200-meter race. Brittany Burton also qualified for regional competition with a five-foot winning effort in the high jump. The 400-meter relay team of Taylor, Destiny Poteat, Jelisa Oakley, and Burton also won with a qualifying time of 52.87.

Oakley won the 100-meter race with a time of 13.03, closely followed by teammates Burton (13.04) and Taylor (13.09).

In the field events, Taylor scored a second in the long jump of over 14 feet, and Poteat was third with an 11-8 effort.

Poteat and Alesha Barnette also placed in both hurdle events. Poteat was first in the 100 with an 18.91 time, and third in the 300s with a 57.0. Barnette was runner-up in both the 100 at 19.69, and the 300 at 55.79.

The Rocket track teams compete at Northern Durham next Wednesday.
