CHAPEL HILL For the fourth time this season, the Person
golf team ended up with a fifth-place finish in the seasons
fifth Piedmont Athletic Conference match Monday afternoon
at the Chapel Hill Country Club.
Chapel Hill was the host team and notched third place with
a team score of 155, two shots behind second-place Riverside
(153) and 11 back of match-winner East Chapel Hill (144).
Northern Durham placed fourth at 163 while the Rockets ended
with a team score of 165 and were led by senior Joe Weinberger,
whos committed to attend Wake Forest University next
year.
Weinberger had the third best score of the match with a 37,
but no other Person player could break 40.
Brice Mitchell and James Weinberger carded 41s, and Brett
Perkins was next in line with a 46.
Despite not gaining any ground in their quest for a top-four
finish in the conference standings, Rocket coach Mark Lunsford
said the performance was an improvement over last Thursdays
fifth-place effort at the Roxboro Country Club.
But he said the team needs to put together a solid nine-hole
effort from beginning to end.
Overall, I thought we played well considering it was
raining and its a tough course, he said. We
just have to have a day where we put it together for the whole
match.
Northern currently holds the first-place position in the
overall conference standings by just one point over ECH and
two points over Chapel Hill and Riverside, who are tied for
third.
The fifth-place Rockets are five points out of fourth place.
On Monday, the other finishers were Jordan in sixth with
a 167, Hillside in seventh with a 214, and Southern Durham
in eighth with a 223.
Person had a duals match at Oxford Webb on Tuesday, and resumes
conference play at the sixth PAC-6 match Thursday at the Hope
Valley Golf Course in Durham, with Jordan serving as the host
team.
