DURHAM Brice Mitchell shot a 39 to lead the Person
Rockets to a fourth-place finish in the seasons sixth
Piedmont Athletic Conference nine-hole match Thursday at the
Hope Valley Golf Course.
The Rockets had a team score of 163, four strokes better
than fifth-place East Chapel Hill, which ended the day with
a 167.
Riverside won the match with a 152, followed by 155s from
Northern Durham and Chapel Hill.
Mitchell was the only Rocket to break 40. James Weinberger
and Matt Hepler finished with 41s, and Brett Perkins carded
a 42.
Rocket coach Mark Lunsford said his fifth-place team, which
is six points behind fourth-place Chapel Hill in the conference
standings, will need to take a first and a third in the final
two PAC-6 matches to earn a spot in the Division 4A team regional
competition.
We also have to hope that Chapel Hill finishes fourth
in both matches, he said.
That aside, Lunsford was happy with Persons overall
performance Thursday.
You have to be pleased when you have sophomores and
a freshman in the top four, he said. It was also
nice to finish ahead of East Chapel Hill [which is battling
for the conference title]. It was a good day for us.
Jordan was the host team of Thursdays match and finished
sixth with a 179. Hillside was seventh with a 212, and Southern
Durham eighth with a 232.
On Tuesday, Person lost a duals match to Oxford Webb by a
185-177 score. Perkins was the top Rocket player with a 42
while Trevor Kendrick shot a 44 in the loss.
According to Lunsford, three Person players Joe Weinberger,
James Weinberger, and Mitchell have qualified for regional
individual competition. Perkins is close to qualifying.
