Along with being selected to the Piedmont Athletic Conference
all-star team this season, Person High School basketball player
Tony Winstead received recognition at the area level as well,
as he was recently chosen for the All-District second team.
As a junior forward for the Rockets this season, Winstead
was Persons major offensive weapon, scoring a total
of 406 points for an average of 16.9 per game. He was also
a force on the boards, hauling down nearly 11 rebounds per
game.
In all, Winstead was one of 14 area players selected to the
All-District team.
Rocket head coach Charles Dacus said Winsteads inclusion
serves as a boost for the Person program.
Its good to have somebody from our program that
people outside of Roxboro feel is a valuable player,
he said. It just proves how good Tony is and that people
in the area respect his ability.
Winstead had seven 20-plus point games, including a season
high of 26 against conference rival Jordan, and pulled down
19 boards in Persons PAC-6 tournament loss to regular-season
champion Southern Durham.
He has a knack for scoring around the basket from a
number of different positions in the low-post area,
said Dacus. He finds a way most of the time against
bigger, taller opponents to score the ball.
The coach also praised Winsteads impact on the boards
and on defense.
He really has a nose for the ball when it comes off
the rim. For someone whos not that tall, hes got
the ability to block shots and alter shots. Hes got
great timing on the ball when the other player is attempting
to shoot.
Winstead helped lead the Rockets to a 12-12 overall record
(which includes two forfeit wins) and a sixth-place finish
in the PAC-6 in 2007-08.
Other conference players selected to the team were: Ty Alston
of East Chapel Hill (first team), JaMario Clayton of Southern
(first team), Carlos Sanford of Riverside (first team), Justin
Watts of Jordan (first team), Marcus Wells of Southern (first
team), Denzel Robinson of Chapel Hill (second team), and Phillip
Williams of Riverside (second team).
