Chase City. Va. man
- 12/12/07

A Chase City, Va. man died Friday evening as a result of injuries he sustained in a single vehicle accident on N.C. 49 North.

Curtis Miles Stebbins, 49, of Chase City died after he was reportedly partially ejected from the 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck he was driving when it overturned and struck a mailbox.

The scene of the accident was 12.4 miles north of Roxboro and nearly one mile north of Ray Road. The wreck took place at approximately 5:45 p.m. Friday.

According to investigating North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.A. Gentry, Stebbins was traveling north on N.C. 49 when he ran off the right side of the roadway and lost control of the truck. The truck then crossed the roadway and ran off the left side before coming back onto the roadway, flipping over and striking the mailbox on the right side of the road.

Gentry estimated the speed of Stebbins’ vehicle at 70 miles per hour. The posted speed limit in the area is 55 mph. According to the Patrol, Stebbins was not wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol was not cited as a factor in the accident.

Stebbins was transferred by Person County EMS to Person Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Damage to the truck driven by Stebbins was estimated at $10,000.

Stebbins was the eighth person to die in a traffic accident on Person County roads this year.
