It was no blitz down the boulevard,
but Ayla Dunn of Bethel Hill Charter School won the 2008 Person
County Spelling Bee by correctly spelling the two words during
round 10.
Student preparation and confidence were evident for the event,
said Maggie Whitt, assistant superintendent for Person County
Schools.
Whitt said the 20 participants in this years bee actually
spelled 39 of 40 words during the first two rounds.
Sixteen students were still spelling strong during the third
round. Words like cylindrical, aeronautics
and abhorrence eliminated some spellers, however.
By the seventh round, 104 words had been spelled correctly.
Whitt said bee runner-up Samuel Unger was very expressive,
causing the audience to laugh several times. Unger,
also the runner-up from North Elementary School, earned second
place in the 12th round by spelling cadaverous
and cafeteria.
Todd Boycher was the pronouncer for the event, calling 143
words before the annual spelling bee had its winner and runner-up.
The spelling bee is sponsored annually by the Roxboro Jaycees
and Person County Schools.
Sarah Morton, a Southern Middle School teacher, is the Jaycees
spelling bee coordinator while Whitt is coordinator for Person
County Schools. Each school designates a teacher coordinator
to organize the bee at the individual schools.
