Opportunity knocked Saturday morning in Uptown Roxboro and
the City of Roxboros newly formed Pedestrian Plan Steering
Committee took advantage.
With a host of Personians already Uptown Saturday morning
for an event hosted by the Roxboro Uptown Development Corp.,
members of the committee hit the streets seeking public input
for its Pedestrian Transportation Plan. A booth was also set
up for citizens to visit.
The Roxboro Pedestrian Transportation Plan is part of a statewide
matching grants program through the North Carolina Department
of Transportation that is designed to support local communities
in their efforts to plan for bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
City of Roxboro Public Services Director Andy Oakley said
Tuesday, The booth on Saturday was great.
[Communications director] Linda [Briggs] did a great
job getting the folks to participate from the crowd,
Oakley added. The citizens that spoke were very excited
and a number of the people would like to see both sidewalks
and greenways in the community.
As of Tuesday, Oakley was unable to cite specific ideas suggested
by the citizens, but he said further information would be
forthcoming.
We have not compiled everything yet, Oakley said.
We hope to have the study completed by the end of the
summer.
Last week, Oakley said committee members had identified as
specific concerns better connection from residential areas
and new development into Uptown and to destinations such as
Huck Sansbury Park, as well as provision for more active living
opportunities in terms of pedestrian facilities and programs.
He also said that major roads and intersections that pose
a concern for pedestrian safety had also been discussed.
On Saturday, citizens were provided maps for writing comments
and identifying places they would like to get to on foot,
areas perceived to be unsafe, ideas for trails, etc.
Oakley noted that citizens wishing to offer suggestions can
still do so by visiting the citys Web site at www.cityofroxboro.com
and filling out a survey. That, he said, is an option many
have taken advantage of thus far.
Our consultants (Greenways Inc.) were really excited
about the online contributors, Oakley said. We
have had better response than some of the larger municipalities.
I attribute that to the great support that we have gotten
from LeighAnn Creeson at the Person County Health Department
and [Briggs] efforts to inform the employees and the
residents.
