Personians head to the polls Tuesday - 5/3/08

By TIM CHANDLER, C-T Associate Editor

Voters will cast ballots at 14 precincts across Person County during Tuesday’s primary election.

Polls will open Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. and will remain open for voters until 7:30 p.m.

Personians hoping to miss the Tuesday rush of voters at the polls have one last shot today to take advantage of one stop voting.

The Person County Board of Elections office at 331 S. Morgan St. and the Person County Public Library at 319 S. Main St. were to be open for early voters Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. One stop voting was also offered this election at the Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department through Friday, but that site will not be open for early voters today.

One stop voting numbers for the primary picked up near the end of the week.

Person County Elections Director Brenda Whitlow said there had been a steady stream of voters at the board of elections office and “even more people” at the library.

“One time this morning, they had a line to the door when I went by there,” Whitlow said Friday.

Just after 4 p.m. Friday, a total of 2,751 one stop ballots had been cast, more than double the one stop voting total from April 17 through early afternoon Tuesday.

“I am happier with the results of our one stop locations since we have picked up significantly for the last couple of days,” Whitlow said.

Whitlow reported Friday afternoon that 1,253 early ballots had been cast at the library, an additional 950 at the board of elections office and 368 in Timberlake.

That could be a good sign that this year’s primaries could draw between 45 and 50 percent of Person County’s nearly 23,000 voters, as Whitlow earlier this week said could be likely.

As far as Person County voters are concerned, the key contest Tuesday shows up on the Democratic primary ballot. That contest is for the Democratic nominations to three seats on the Person Board of County Commissioners.

Five Democratic hopefuls are bidding for the top three positions and a shot at three Republican hopefuls in the November general election.

The Democratic hopefuls include incumbent Commissioner Jimmy B. Clayton, 61; Mike Barrett, 46; David Brooks, 50; Ray Jeffers, 24; and former commissioner Samuel H. Winstead, 82.

Profiles of the five Democratic candidates can be found on page B-10 of today’s edition along with a series of questions posed to the Democratic candidates by The Courier-Times and their answers.

Another contest on the primary ballot with a Person County connection is the Democratic primary for the state Senate seat from the 23rd District, in which veteran Sen. Ellie Kinnaird or Carrboro in Orange County is being challenged in her bid for nomination to a seventh term by Moses Carey, chairman of the Orange Board of County Commissioners.

The remaining primary contests are for national and state offices and are led by the Democratic presidential battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, as well as the Democratic and Republican primaries for North Carolina governor.
