Jesse C. Chandler

The funeral for Jesse Cline Chandler, 89 of 3601 Helena Moriah Rd., Rougemont, who died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital, was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home chapel by Elder Jimmy Gray. Burial was in the Surl Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Mr. Chandler was a native of Person County, the son of the late Jesse Frank and Mattie Melissa Chambers Chandler. His late wife was Thelma Cozart Chandler. His late son was Colin Cline Chandler and his late granddaughter was Kimberly Ann Strickland.

He was a U. S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.

He was retired from farming and Eaton Corp., and later was the owner and operator of Chandler Store.

Surviving are five children, Ronnie Chandler of Semora, Linda Lee of Roxboro, Ricky Chandler and Gary (Shorty) Chandler, both of Rougemont and Jenny Carol Pennington of Timberlake; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Donald Strickland, Scott Strickland, Chris Chandler, Rusty Chandler, Bill Ashley, Bart Warren and Dee Riley.

Tony Gentry, David Gentry, Ronald Tilley, Gerald Tilley and Chuck Davis served as honorary pallbearers.

Walter F. Gentry

LILLINGTON — The funeral for the Rev. Walter F. Gentry, 93, of Lillington, who died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Wake Medical Ceneter in Cary, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, in Providence Baptist Church in Roxboro by the Rev. Dennis McDonald. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The Rev. Gentry was a native of Person County, the son of the late William Henry and Lelia Chandler Gentry.

A graduate of Wake Forest College, he earned a master’s degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

His first pastorate was Belhaven Baptist Church. He later ministered to other Baptist churches, including Philadelphia/Momeyer, Churchland, Walkertown and finally Antioch Baptist Church in Mamera.

After his retirement, he served as interim pastor for various churches in Person County, completing a lifetime of ministry as associate pastor of Providence Baptist Church in Roxboro.

Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Odelia Perkins Gentry; a son, Walter Lee Gentry and wife, Patsy, of Lillington; two daughters, Carol G. Wall and husband, Arthur, of Angier and Frances G. Thomas and husband, Neill Baxley Jr., of Lillington; a brother, Berley Gentry of Roxboro; three sisters, Irene Bowes of Roxboro, Virginia Fortner of Concord and Elsie Britt of Lumberton; six grandchildren, Stephanie Johnson, Sharon Forber, Susan Stevens, Neill B. Thomas III, Walter Thomas and Dianna Thomas; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at O’Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home in Lillington. In addition, the family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at Providence Baptist Church in Roxboro.

Eleanor D. Gray

Eleanor Davis Gray, 87, of Timberlake, died Saturday morning, January 5, 2008, at Durham Regional Hospital. Mrs. Gray was married for 53 years to the late Raymond S. Gray. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie Barnette Davis, and the mother of the late Carl S. Gray.

Mrs. Gray is survived by three children and their families, Kathryn Gray and Jack Hester of Roxboro, John R. Gray and Susan Cates, granddaughters Joni R. and Jessica R. Gray of Timberlake, Betty Gray and Lacy Compton of Timberlake, grandson Jason W. Compton of Raleigh. She is also survived by a sister, Margaret Davis Yarboro.

Before her marriage, Mrs. Gray worked in her family’s store, often delivering groceries on her bicycle. She also worked at C&A and Roses. She became a mother, and a homemaker, who loved her garden, canning vegetables, cooking for her family, being close to nature, and her country home. Mrs. Gray was a member of New Bethel UMC, a former member of UMW, and the Home Demonstration Club.

In 1960, Mrs. Gray was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disease that prohibited her from being able to participate in many activities. With a fierce inner spirit and determination she survived many years past all medical expectations.

The funeral is planned for 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 7, 2008, at New Bethel UMC. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The Rev. Douglas Wagner will officiate. Visitation will be at Brooks & White Funeral Home, Sunday evening, 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of her daughter, Betty Compton, 2020 Ned Moore Road, Timberlake. The pallbearers will be George Foushee, Paul Hatley, Phil Nance, John Byrd, Phil O’Briant, and Ronald Foushee.

Dorothy W. Green

CLOVER, Va. — The funeral for Dorothy Williams Green, 77, of North Main St., who died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital in Roxboro, was conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, in Bethel Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. William Hicks. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Born May 10, 1930, in Halifax County, Va., Mrs. Green was the daughter of the late Arthur and Annie Smith Williams. Her late husband was Henry Louis Green. Her late daughter was Brenda Green. and her late sons were Herman Green and Louis Lorenzo Green. Her late sisters were Estelle Williams, Margaret Williams, Mary Williams and Mamie Green and her late brothers, were Herbert Williams, Henry Williams and Berkley Williams.

She was a former employee of Tultex, Inc.

She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Lacks of Clover; two sons, Larry Green of Clover and Leon Green of Halifax; a sister, Shirley Brown of New York; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

Luther R. Hogan

DURHAM — The funeral for Luther R. Hogan 86, of 619 Horton Rd., who died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008 at his home, was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, in the Clements Funeral Home chapel by Pastor Jack Cox and Pastor Ron Christ. Burial was in the Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Hogan was a native of Durham County, the son of the late R.F. and Bessie Dolla Hogan. His late wife of 57 years was Ruth Thomas Hogan. His late son was Luther (Rick) R. Hogan Jr., and his late grandson was Jeff Hogan.

He was retired from the American Tobacco Co.

He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Jenny Hogan of Durham; a grandson, Richie W. Hogan of Timberlake; and one great-grandchild, Jenna Hogan of Timberlake.

Pallbearers were members of the Men’s Bible Class of Liberty Baptist Church.

Nannie H. Oakley

The funeral for Nannie Lou Hubbard Oakley, 76, of 1243 Cavel Chub Lake Rd., who died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008 in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 9, in Theresa Baptist Church by the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial will be in the Oakley Family Cemetery.

Mrs. Oakley was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late Dolph and Lillie Mae Hubbard. Her late husband was Raymond Oakley.

She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp. and was also a seamstress.

She was a member of Theresa Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Jerry A. Oakley of Winston-Salem; a sister, Irene Clayton of Roxboro; and a grandchild, Madison Virginia Oakley.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Hubbard, Calvin Clayton, Bud Albert Clayton, Alton Reaves, Adam Oakley, Greg Oakley, Reggie Oakley and Johnnie Oakley.

Garland Clayton, Howard Clayton, Joeye Wrenn and Nick Fox will be honorary pallbearers.

James L. Poole Jr.

PATERSON, N.J. — The funeral for James Lewis Poole Jr. 76, of Paterson, N.J., who died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Mill Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Frederick K. Wilson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Poole was a native of Person County, the son of the late James Lewis and Esdell Paylor Poole.

He was a member of Mill Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are four sisters, Freelon Davis of Uniontown, Pa., Cleo Smith of New Rochelle, NY, Lucy Williams of Brandywine, Md. and Doris Addison of Roxboro; and two brothers, Charlie Poole of Washington, D.C. and Theodore Poole of Roxboro.

Arrangements are by Cunningham & Nelson Funeral Home.

Mary B. White

A private memorial service will be held at a later date for Mary Bryan White, 103, who died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital.

Born in Miscoe, Ohio, Mrs. White was the daughter of the late James West and Hazel Boone Pickering Bryan. Her late husbands were Clyde Eugene Green and Clea R. White. Her late son was Clyde Eugene (Gene) Green Jr.

Mrs. White was a homemaker and a Methodist.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Winder Holeman and husband, Gus, of Roxboro; and a daughter-in-law, Juanita Green of Roxboro; four grandsons, Bryan Holeman, Larry Holeman, Jay Holeman, Gary Green, five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
