Hattie L. Chavis
The funeral for Hattie Lois Chavis, 75, of 6565 Hurdle Mills Rd.,
Hurdle Mills, who died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008 at Durham Regional
Hospital, was conducted at noon Monday, Jan. 14, in Lattisville
Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. George Crews III. Burial was in
the Mt. Zion AME Church cemetery in Hillsborough.
Surviving are her husband James O. Chavis; a son, Stanley D. Chavis
and wife, Doris, of Mobile, Ala.; two sisters, Beulah Beasley and
Sallie Jenning, both of Cedar Grove; and four grandchildren.
Morris W. Drumwright
The funeral for Morris W. Drumwright, 78, of 5252 Woodsdale Rd,
who died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2008 at his home, was conducted at 11
a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in Allen Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Milton
Battle. Burial was in the Bailey Chapel AME Church cemetery.
Surviving are five daughters, Brenda Ann Drumwright, Edith Drumwright
O'Brient, Ramona Sylvia Drumwright, Sandra Devone Drumwright and
Cynthia Drumwright, all of Roxboro; two sons, Morris W. Drumwright
and Michael Drumwright, both of Roxboro; three sisters, Druecille
Bond and Willie Mae Rogers, both of Bowie, Md. and Frances Whitaker
of Raleigh; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Ann Baker Gupton
PAMPLIN, Va. A memorial service for JoAnn Baker Gupton,
55, of Pamplin, Va., who died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 at her home,
was conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, in the Watkins, Cooper
& Lyon Funeral Home chapel, in Clarksville, Va., by the Rev.
Bill McEntire.
Mrs. Gupton was the daughter of the late Ollie Mae Baker.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Frank A. Gupton; a daughter, Tammie
Williams and husband, Rusty, of Wilton; a brother, Ricky Brantley
of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Janey and Wesley Williams.
William B. Hayward
A memorial service for William Barr (Bill) Hayward, 72, of 2686
Leasburg Rd., who died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at his home, will be
conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, in the home of his son, James
Hayward, 2844 Leasburg Rd., Roxboro, by Charles Bullock.
Born in Emporium, Pa., Mr. Hayward was the son of the late John
Barr and Geraldine Hemphill Hayward.
He was retired from the U. S. Air Force after a career of 25 years.
He rose to the rank of senior master sergeant and served during
the Korean and Vietnam wars. He later retired as branch manager
of Hobart Corp. in San Diego, Calif.
He moved to Roxboro in 2003 and had enjoyed living here for the
past five years. He had a great concern for the environment and
was an animal lover.
He was a Bahá'í.
Surviving are his wife, Pamela Triggs Hayward; two sons, James
Barr Hayward of Roxboro and Stuart Charles Hayward, of Encinitas,
Calif.; a daughter, Linda Joy Hayward Emerson of Bishop, Calif.;
a brother, John Hayward of Ashville, N.Y.; two sisters, Becky Hayward
of Durham and Anne Griffin of Sanford; and a grandson, Shaun Hiloki
Barr Hayward.
Visitation will follow the service at the home of his son.

Clifton D. Hester
The funeral for Clifton Daniel Hester, 50, of 1335 Dick Holeman
Rd., Timberlake, who died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at Person Memorial
Hospital, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, in Old
Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the Rev. Clyde Glass. Burial will be
in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Deborah J. Hester; a daughter, Euneekia
C. Hester of Timberlake; a brother, James A. Hester of Roxboro;
three sisters, Betty S. Smith of Semora, Barbara H. Anderson of
Baltimore, Md. and Erma H. Faulkner of Semora; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 16 at Hester,
Whitted & Daye Funeral Home.
Tony R. Outlaw
The funeral for Tony Ricky Outlaw, 51, of 538 Outlaw Rd., who died
Saturday, Dec. 12, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted
at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 16, in New Mt. Zion Baptist Church by the
Rev. Dorwin L. Howard. Burial will be in the Peace Memorial Cemetery.
Surviving are his mother, Augusta W. Outlaw of the home; four sisters,
Evangeline Brown of Bronx, N.Y., Brenda Scott and Wanda Jay, both
of Roxboro and Eloise Everette of Durham; and three brothers, Cornell
Outlaw of Halifax, Va., Edwin Outlaw and Christopher Outlaw, both
of Roxboro.
Arrangements are by Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Service.
John K. Poole
The funeral for John Knight (Jack) Poole, 83, of 13301 Virgilina
Rd., who died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at his home, was conducted
at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in High View Baptist Church by Pastor
Tommy Faust. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Born in Halifax County, Va., Mr. Poole was the son of the late
James Link and Mary Holt Poole. His late brother was Barton Poole,
and his late sister was Gladys Madden.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II.
He was retired from Burlington Industries and attended High View
Baptist Church.
He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreing Wars, and he
also was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his wife, Lucy Stigall Poole; two sons, Jimmy Earl
Poole and wife, Eady, of Rocky Mount and John K. Poole Jr. and wife,
Lynn, of Hillsborough; a daughter, Sandi Hughes and husband, Donnie,
of Halifax, Va.; a sister, Joyce Davis of Greensboro; and four grandchildren,
Jay Poole, Heath Crews, Seth Poole and Lesli Hughes.
Pallbearers were Jay Poole, Heath Crews, Seth Poole, Charles (Buck)
Glasscock, Alvin Dickerson, Tommy Ramsey, Tim Gentry and Wright
Whitlow.
Herbert Overby and Rommie Lee Adcock were honorary pallbearers.
Thomas W. Riley
The funeral for Thomas Wesley Riley, 83, of 152 Overby Riley Rd.,
who died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital, was
conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, in Grace United Methodist Church
by the Rev. Ross Thompson and the Rev. Stanley Carver. Burial was
in the Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
Mr. Riley was a native of Durham County, the son of the late Austin
Mitchell and Lula Smith Riley. His late son was Terry Gene Riley.
His late brother was Austin Smith Riley and his late sisters were
Gladys L. Riley, Willie E. Riley and Carrie R. Tatum.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II and
earned the Purple Heart.
He was retired from Sprint Centel, and was a member of Grace United
Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Pearl Reaves Riley; three sons;
Andy Riley and wife, Deborah, of Hurdle Mills, Donald (Smiley) Riley
and Randal Riley and wife, Anita, all of Roxboro; a daughter: Joyce
R. Robertson of Roxboro; a daughter-in-law: Delores W. Riley of
Roxboro; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Andy Riley, Chad Riley, Chris Robertson, Jason
Riley, Justin Riley, Kevin Robertson and Stevie Robertson.
Ada M. Williams
The funeral for Ada Mae Williams, 73, of 3285 Hurdle Mills Rd.,
who died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital, will
be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. in Shady Hill Missionary
Baptist Church by Dr. James A. Richmond. Burial will be in the Cedar
Grove Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Gail Lipscomb and Angela Denise
Daye, both of Roxboro; a son, Michael Orlando Williams of Danville,
Va.; and a brother, Allie Lee Cash of Baltimore, Md.
