Jesse E. Anderson
The funeral for Jesse Edward Anderson, 96, of 161 Henderson Rd.,
who died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital, will
be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 23, in the Brooks & White
Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Bobby Buchanan and the Rev. Edgar
DeJesus. Burial will be in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Halifax County, Va., Mr. Anderson was the son of the late
Willie Thomas and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Glasgow Anderson. His late
wife was Janie Hall Anderson.
He was the co-owner/operator of Jesse Anderson & Son Construction,
along with his son, Glenn. He helped build the Pentagon and seaplane
hangers at the U.S. Navy bases in Maryland and California during
World War II.
He was a member of Front Street Baptist Church for over 50 years
and served as a lifetime deacon and Sunday school director, and
he was a member of the Gideons International.
He was an avid gardener and loved to play the harmonica.
Surviving are his children Edward Glenn Anderson and wife, Catherine
Howerton, and Cheryl Anderson Pegram and husband, Asa Randolph Jr.,
all of Roxboro; two grandchildren, Tammy Anderson Walker and husband,
Blanks, and Gary Glenn Anderson and wife, Lisa Hall; and four great-grandchildren,
Grayson Blanks Walker, Lara Taylor Walker, Alexis Brooke Anderson
and Jesse Garrett Anderson.
Pallbearers will be Clyde Kerley, Bobby Glasgow, Larry Dixon, Bobby
Hall, Randy Jones, Charles Harris and James Warren.
Members of Gideons International will be honorary pallbearers.

Louise W. Clayton
The funeral for Louise Wilburn Clayton, 102, of 615 Ridge Rd.,
who died Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Person Memorial Hospital, was
conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in Roxboro Baptist Church by
Dr. DuPre Sanders and the Rev. Gerald Hodges. Burial was in the
Burchwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Clayton was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Robert Lee and Elizabeth Woodson Wilburn. Her late husband
was Maynard C. Clayton, former publisher of The Courier-Times.
She was a housewife and a member of Roxboro Baptist Church where
she taught Sunday School Class for many years.
Surviving are a son, Jerry Clayton, Courier-Times publisher emeritus,
and wife, Marjorie Brinn Clayton; three grandchildren, Kelly Clayton
Smith and husband, Richard Hughes, Thomas Preston Brinn Clayton,
current Courier-Times publisher, and wife, Linda Lipscomb, Jerry
Maynard Clayton II and wife, Elizabeth Hansen; and four great-grandchildren,
Sarah Brinn Smith, Hannah Callen Smith, Eleanor Elizabeth Clayton
and Nikolay Alexander Brinn Clayton.
Pallbearers were Gene Roz, Tommy Lawrence, Jim Tolin, Darrell Jones,
Earl Gurtner and Thom Jachimiak.

James E. Davis
The funeral for James Earl Davis, 53, of 201 Harris Morris Rd.,
who died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 at his home, will be conducted at
11 a.m. today, Jan. 23, in Mill Creek Baptist Church by the Rev.
Tommy Robertson and the Rev. Brian Hagar. Burial will be in the
Davis Family Cemetery.
Mr. Davis was a native of Granville County, the son of the late
James Thomas and Edna Earl Davis. His late son was Donald Thomas
Davis, and his late brother was John Stephen Davis.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a member of Mill Creek Baptist
Church.
Surviving are his wife, Sue Weber Davis; a daughter, Michelle D.
Poole and husband, Scottie, of Roxboro; a brother, Robert Edward
Frazier of Butner; two sisters, Patricia Woody of Durham and Betty
Puryear of Roxboro; three grandchildren, Garrett Thomas Poole, Jordan
Michael Davis and Luke Thomas Davis.
Pallbearers will be Raymond Carter, Wayne Collie, Frankie Gentry,
Bobby Hall, Dale Kendrick, Steve Thomas, J.R. Whitt and Charlie
Yarborough.

James D. McBroom
The funeral for James Davis (JD) McBroom, 75, of 13439 Virgilina
Rd., who died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital,
will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Brooks &
White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Buddy Hall. Burial will be
in the Person Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Person County, Mr. McBroom was the son of the late Sam
and Fannie Mae Wilmoth McBroom.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean Conflict.
Formerly employed with Collins & Aikman Corp., for the last
34 years he was employed by the Person County Sheriffs Department
as a bailiff, chief jailer and deputy. Upon his retirement, he continued
working part-time at the Person County Courthouse until 2006.
His favorite pastime was restoring Ford Falcons and fishing.
He was a member of Triple Springs Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Wilkerson McBroom; two children,
Gwen Solomon and husband, Donnie, of Roxboro and Samuel James McBroom
and wife, Janie, of Plano, Texas; and six grandchildren, Kimberly
Solomon, Cindy Solomon, Brandon James McBroom (currently serving
in Iraq), Jordon McBroom, Jake McBroom and Bishop McBroom.
Pallbearers will be Charles Bowes, Robert Bumpass, Dennis Oakley,
Dewey Jones, Herman Greene and Ernest Poole.
Employees of the Person County Sheriffs Department and the
staff at the Person County Courthouse will be honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Jan. 23, at
the funeral home.

Hansel M. McDougal
The funeral for Hansel Matthew (Mack) McDougal, 90, of 415 Jones
St., who died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008 at the Roxboro Nursing Center,
will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in New Mt. Zion Baptist
Church by the Rev. Dorwin L. Howard. Burial will be in the Peace
Memorial Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Geneva W. McDougal; four daughters, Carolyn
Word of Laurel, Md., Eva McDougal of Roxboro, Amy Susong of Salisbury
and Sharon McDougal-Isley of Monroe; four sons, Hansel M. McDougal
Jr. of Roxboro, James McDougal of Sumter, S.C., Bernard McDougal
of Rocky Mount and Cleophus McDougal of Raleigh; eight grandchildren;
and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Jan. 23, at Hester,
Whitted & Daye Funeral Home and at the church on Thursday, Jan.
24, for one hour before the service..
David W. Rogers
A memorial service for David W. Rogers, 82, of Roxboro, who died
Friday, Jan. 18, 2008, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan.
25, in Roxboro Baptist Church by Dr. Dupre Sanders.
Born on May 29, 1925, Mr. Rogers was a native of Greensboro, the
son of the late A.A. and Mattie Straughan Rogers.
He earned degrees from Campbell College, Wake Forest College and
Duke University.
A U. S. Air Force veteran, he served during World War II.
A career educator, Dr. Rogers was a high school math and English
teacher, principal in Caswell County, associate professor of education
at Furman University, director of education in the city school system
of Lumberton and associate superintendent of schools in Burke County
and then for Person County Schools.
He was a member of the Mars Hill College Board of Advisors and
the Phi Delta Kappa professional fraternity. He was active in organizing
Western Piedmont Technical College in Burke County as well as serving
as an organizing member and trustee of Piedmont Community College
in Person County.
He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
He was a member of Roxboro Baptist Church and the Person County
Retired School Personnel.
In 2004, the Dr. David W. Rogers Educational Scholarship was named
in his honor.
Surviving are his wife, Christine Slaughter Rogers; three children,
Joan McLaughlin and David W. Rogers Jr., both of Person County and
Gloria Alderman and husband, John, of Pittsboro; and five grandchildren.

Thomas R. Tillett
BURLINGTON The funeral for Thomas Reade Tillett, 83, of
Crestwood Drive, Burlington, who died Sunday Jan. 20, 2008 at Alamance
Regional Medical Center following a brief illness, will be conducted
at 11 a.m., today, Jan. 23, in the Rich & Thompson Funeral Home
chapel, in Burlington, by the Rev. Bruce Brown and Dr. Howard Silver,
former Director of the Mt. Zion Baptist Association. A graveside
service will be conducted at 2:30 today, Jan. 23, in the Mt. Tirzah
United Methodist Church cemetery in Person County.
A native of Person County, Mr. Tillett was the ninth of 11 children
born to the late Ernest Noell and Sue Reade Tillett of the Mt. Tirzah
Community. His late son was Stephen B. Tillett. His late brothers
were James T. Tillett, Arthur H. Tillett and Ben W. Tillett, and
his late sisters were Elizabeth T. Howard, Lucy T. Dunn, Adeline
T. McDowell, Grace T. Temple and Betty T. Turner.
He grew up on a tobacco farm near his birth site before moving
to Burlington in 1950.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Betty Ann Bradsher Tillett;
a daughter, Ellen Tillett Speight and husband, Bob, of Greenville;
a sister, Nancy T. Mel of Rancho Marguerita, Calif.; a brother,
William F. Tillett of Mt. Tirzah; and two granddaughters, Jennifer
E. Speight and Mary C. Speight, both of Raleigh.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific area during
World War II. He was in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered
on Sept. 2, 1945.
He graduated in 1950 from N.C. State University with a degree in
mechanical engineering, and he was a member of Pi Tau Sigma, Tau
Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi honorary engineering societies.
A member of Northside Baptist Church for over 42 years, he was
an adult Sunday School teacher and a deacon. He was a former Boy
Scout leader of an early church troop.
Before retiring in 1983, he was employed with the AT&T in Burlington,
Greensboro, and Whippany, N.J. for 33 years. During this time he
worked for Western Electric (now Lucent) and Bell Telephone Labs,
assisting in the design of guidance and control equipment for missile
systems for the U.S. government. He was a member of Telephone Pioneers
of America.
After retirement, he, being an avid enthusiast of family history,
spent much of his time doing genealogical research on his familys
history. He had written many documents, concerning family ancestors,
for distribution to family members and kin.

Donald H. Tingen
The funeral for Donald Henry Tingen, 65, of 740 Tingen Mine Rd.,
who died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008 at his home, will be conducted at
2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in the Strickland Funeral Home chapel
by the Rev. Stewart Crank. Burial will be in the Person Memorial
Cemetery.
Mr. Tingen was a native of Person County, the son of the late Henry
Thomas and Susie Blanche Tingen. His late wife of 45 years was Shelby
OBrien Tingen. His late brothers were Archie Bradsher Tingen
and Joseph Thomas Tingen, and his late sister was Edith Tingen Frazier.
He was a truck driver for Collins & Aikman Corp. and also enjoyed
farming.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Linwood T. Tingen and wife, Misty, and
Donald Wade Tingen and wife, Holly, all of Roxboro; a daughter,
Trena J. Tingen of Roxboro; and two grandchildren, Brittany Tingen
and Christopher Tingen.
