Isla N. Bagbey
NELSON, Va. The funeral for Isla Nelson Bagbey, 78, of Nelson,
Va., who died Monday, Feb. 4, 2008 at Halifax Regional Hospital,
will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 6, in Amis Chapel Baptist
Church by the Rev. Ron Craddock, the Rev. Jim McAlister and the
Rev. Gene Brooks. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bagbey was a native of Halifax County, Va., the daughter of
the late John Irby and Berta Lowery Nelson. Her late brother was
James D. Nelson and her late sister was Lucille Allgood.
She was a graduate of Oak Hill High School and a member of the
first graduating class of Halifax-South Boston School of Nursing.
Her nursing career spanned 58 years and during those years was
employed with South Boston Hospital, Halifax Regional Hospital,
The Fuller-Roberts Clinic and Prompt Medical. In addition to nursing,
she loved to farm and be the "neighborhood nurse."
She was a member of Amis Chapel Baptist Church where she was active
in the Womens Missionary Union.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Floyd Allen Bagbey; a daughter,
Wanda Harris and husband, R. Michael, of Raleigh; a son Bobby Bagbey
and wife, Sherryl, of Buffalo Junction, Va.; three brothers, Roosevelt
Nelson of Nelson, Irby Nelson of South Hill, Va. and J. Robert Nelson
of Virgilina, Va.; four sisters, Mary N. Weary of Buffalo Junction,
Virgie McCann of Roxboro, Nannie Taylor and Lucy Nelson, both of
Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren, Bryan Harris and Heather H. Totty,
both of Raleigh, Shannon Bagbey of Clarksville and Robbie Bagbey
of Roxboro; and three great-grandchildren, Haley Harris, Craig Totty
and Austin Harris.
Arrangements are by Watkins, Cooper & Lyon Funeral Home of
Clarksville, Va.
Ricky T. Blalock
The funeral for Ricky Thomas Blalock, 49, of 1909 McGhees Farm
Rd., Semora, who died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008 at Person Memorial
Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the Strickland
Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Leonard Wallington. Burial was in
the Blalock Family Cemetery.
Mr. Blalock was a native of Person County, the son of Andrew Jackson
and Deloris Palmer Blalock, who survives.
He was a self-employed logger and a Baptist.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a son, Ricky Talmon Blalock
of Timberlake; two daughters, Heather King of Louisburg and Donna
Blalock of Creedmoor; and three sisters, Wanda Martinez of Garner,
Brenda Capps of Gainsville, Fla. and Andrea B. Hargis of Roxboro;
his fiancée, Shirley (Mickey) Montague; his step-children,
Bobby Montague, Ronnie Montague and Michael Montague; and nine grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Richard Blalock, Charles Bowes Jr., Chris Bowes,
Danny King, Michael Palmer, Thomas Palmer, David Taylor and Christopher
Whitt.
Margaret B. Johnston
A memorial service for Margaret Burney Johnston, 56, of Salt Lake
City, Utah, who died Nov. 24, 2007, will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 at the home of her sister, Frances Nichols,
8450 Hurdle Mills Rd., Hurdle Mills.
Mrs. Johnston was a native of Utah, the daughter of the late Patsy
Jordan Tillman. Her late husband was Alvin Johnston.
Surviving are a daughter, Marlene Grimsley Corum of Salt Lake City;
a sister, Frances Nichols of Hurdle Mills; and five granddaughters,
Cherokee Grimsley, Cheyenne Grimsley, Clerra Corum, Chambrea Corum
and Chaylee Corum.
Viola B. Weary
The funeral for Viola Bowes Weary, 84, of 159 Maple St., who died
Sunday Feb. 3, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center, will be conducted
at 3 p.m. today, Feb. 6, in Longhurst United Methodist Church. Burial
will be in the Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
Mrs. Weary was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late
Robert and Annie Dixon Bowes. Her late husband was Roy Teague Weary.
Her late sister was Doris Foushee ,and her late brothers were Lawrence
(Feets) Bowes, Herman Bowes and Willie Bowes.
She was retired from Tultex Yarns and was a member of Longhurst
United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Becky Piso and husband, Michael, of Durham;
a sister, Carol Hughes of Cluster Springs, Va.; a brother, Mason
Bowes of Lincoln, Neb., and a grandson, Michael Christopher Piso.
Pallbearers will be Donald Bowes, Gerald Bowes, James Poindexter,
Mike Turner, Richard Vining and Rickey Wrenn.
George Miller and Travis Poindexter will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorials may be made to the Longhurst UMC, 265 Providence Rd.,
Roxboro, NC 27573.
