Hazel W. Carmichael
SOUTH BOSTON, Va. The funeral for Hazel Winn Carmichael,
77, of 3009 Cherry Hill Church Rd., who died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008
at Halifax Regional Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 20, in the Brooks Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Dana Mitchell
Cook. Burial was in the Shady Grove UMC cemetery.
Mrs. Carmichael was born January 15, 1931, in Roxboro, the daughter
of the late George Edward and Mattie Slaughter Winn. Her late husband
was Harry J. Carmichael.
She was a member of Mount Cana United Methodist Church.
Survivors are two daughters, Katherine C. Whitt and husband, Warren,
of South Boston and Joan C. Benson of Roanoke; three brothers, George
Winn Jr., Charles Winn and Billy Winn, all of Richmond, Va.; three
sisters, Frances Jackson of Chase City, Barbara Jean Wade of Bumpass
and Gloria Winn; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.?

Ovid A. Houston
A memorial service for Ovid A. (Skeeter) Houston III, 66, of Rougemont,
who died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center,
was conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, at Grey Stone Baptist
Church.
Prior to his retirement in 2000, he was employed by Duke University
Medical Center Electric Shop.
He was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Bettie Cawthorne Houston; a daughter, Kimberly
Hensley; a son, W. Alex Houston; and two brothers, James B. Houston
and Michael L. Houston.

Esther P. Simmons
JAMESTOWN The funeral for Esther Peed Simmons, 97, of 503
O'Neil St., who died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008 at her home, was conducted
at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, at Jamestown United Methodist Church
by the Rev. Jim Watford, Warren Kerr and Leland Kerr. Burial was
in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Durham.
Born September 12, 1910 in Person County, Mrs. Simmmons was the
daughter of the late Joseph and Lillie Warren Peed. Her late husband
was Moody Lee Simmons.
She was associated with Duke University for 25 years and was a
member of Jamestown United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Donna Wright and husband, Mickey, of
Jamestown; and two grandchildren, Lee Emerson Wright and Lindsey
Simmons Wright.

Clara Mae Williams
BURLINGTON The funeral for Clara Mae Williams, 70, of 1622
Morningside Dr. Apt H., who died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, was conducted
at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, in the Blackwell Funeral Home chapel
in Burlington. Burial was in the North Lawn Cemetery.
Miss Williams was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Audrey Richards and Minnie Beatrice Bumphus Williams.?Her late
brothers were Richard, Sherman and Alexander Williams and her late
sisters were Laura Bell Tapp, Eva Featherstone, Jearlene Smith and
Margaret Wright.??
She attended Mill Hill Baptist Church.
She enjoyed watching TV and gardening.
Survivors are one son, Larry James Williams of Pa.; a daughter,
Deloise Vincent and husband, Larry, of Burlington; two brothers,
Walter Williams of Bronx, NY and Harry Williams of Mebane, a sister,
Beatrice Evans of Graham; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren;
