Lloyd Borstelmann
DURHAM A memorial service, followed by a wake, for Professor
Lloyd Borstelmann, 86, of Durham, who died in Roxboro at the home
of his caregiver, Minister Gladys W. Cash Piles and her husband,
John, on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008, will be conducted from 4 p.m.
to 7 p.m., Saturday, April 12, at the home of Michael Borstelmann,
3209 Winfield Dr., Durham.
Mr. Borstelmann was born April 30, 1921, in Greensburg, Pa. His
late first wife was Jane Millis Borstelmann.
He moved with his family to Santa Barbara, Calif., in 1936. After
college at Santa Barbara State College and UCLA, he attended the
University of California's Boalt Law School for one year before
enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1942. Following three years of
military service in World War II, he returned to graduate school,
in psychology, at the University of California-Berkeley. He received
his Ph.D. in 1950 and taught for one year at Drake University in
Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Chapel Hill in 1951 to become
an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina. In 1953,
he joined the faculty at Duke University, where he remained with
the Duke University Psychology Department until his retirement as
a full professor in 1986.
Borstelmann was a devoted teacher of undergraduates and trainer
of graduate students in clinical psychology. Associated for two
decades with the Duke Child Guidance Clinic, he counseled Durham
schoolchildren and their families as well. He was also known as
a prominent actor in local theater productions over four decades
in Durham and Chapel Hill, and served on the board of trustees of
the North Carolina Outward Bound School for many years.
Surviving are his second wife, Shirley Tillotson Borstelmann; four
children, Nancy Chandler and husband, Chip, of Monmouth, Maine,
John Borstelmann and wife, Jan, of Tetonia, Idaho, Michael Borstelmann
and wife, Dee, of Durham and Tim Borstelmann and wife, Lynn of Lincoln,
Neb.; and seven grandchildren.

Charlie Brewster
BLAND, Va. The funeral for Charlie (Jessie) Brewster, 60,
of 10514 Kimberling Rd., Bland, Va., will be conducted at 1 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 28 in Shady Grove Church by Charlie Myers and the
Rev. Danny Shortridge.
Mr. Brewster was born Oct. 4, 1947, the son of the late Charlie
(Albert) and Lydia Brewster. His late sisters were Jenette Farmer
and Annie Brewster.
He was employed with the US Mining Co.
Surviving are his wife, Juanita Grose Brewster; his children, Charles
L. Brewster of the home, Rodney L. Brewster and wife, Teresa, of
Trinity, Donna Faye Brewster and John West of Roxboro, Jessie Michael
Brewster and Belinda Tilley of Glen Lyn, Va. and Roger Allen Brewster
and wife, Marie, of Bland; his brothers and sisters, Ethel Farmer
if Rocky Mt, Va., Lola Tracy of Athens, Lebrun Nunley of Oregon,
Alfred Brewster of Mudford, Va., Albert Brewster of Abbs Valley,
Va., Jasper (Pete) Brewster of Maryland and Dorothy White of Athens,
W.Va.
Pallbearers will be Toby Barbour, Steve Hypes, Dennis Powers, Eugene
Powers, Butch French, Larry Hagerman, William Stephens and Bruce
Woods.
Roger Grose will be an honorary pallbearer.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rodriguez Funeral Home,
Pocahontas, Va.

Mary R. Davis
MOREHEAD CITY The funeral for Mary Robertson Davis, 84,
of Morehead City and formerly of Butner, who died Friday, Feb. 22,
2008 at Carteret General Hospital, was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday,
Feb. 24, in the Brooks Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Wayne Best.
Born Nov. 11, 1923, in Halifax County, Va., Mrs. Davis was the
daughter of the late William Cleveland and Martha Cox Robertson.
Her late husband was Stuart Melvin Davis, and her late son was Dr.
William Ross Davis.
She was a lifelong member of Community United Methodist Church
in Butner.
Surviving are a daughter, Janie Davis Taylor and husband, Bill,
of Morehead City; a son, Melvin L. Davis and wife, Sherry, of Beaufort;
a sister, Margaret Robertson Sparks of Roxboro; a brother, Rudolph
Robertson of Roxboro; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Frances H. Latta
The funeral for Frances Helen Hubbard Latta, 81, formerly of 1941
Mt. Harmony Church Rd., Rougemont, who died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008
at Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today,
Feb. 27, in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church by the Rev. Barry Chambers.
Burial will be in the church cemetery
Born in Person County, Mrs. Latta was the daughter of the late
Odie and Lonie Morris Hubbard. Her late husband was Earl C. Latta.
Her late siblings were Annie Mae McGhee, Liza Mooney, Earl Hubbard,
Preston Hubbard, Edward Hubbard and Barbara Ann Walker.
She formerly worked for Collins & Aikman and Somerset Mill.
For many years, she cooked in the cafeteria of Mt. Tirzah School.
She also helped community farmers tie tobacco.
She was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Helen Bowling; two sons, Clinton Latta
of Wendell and Wayne Latta of Rougemont; a brother, Johnny Hubbard
of Burlington; two sisters, Thelma Whitfield Rogers and Mary Jane
Whitt, both of Roxboro; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service.
Pallbearers will be Gardner Whitfield Jr., Jerry B. Hawkins, Pop
Lawrence Walker, Bobby Davis, James Mangum and Bill Anderson.
Dale Cates will be an honorary pallbearer.

William E. Staley
The funeral for William Edward (Ed) Staley, 73, of 4335 Hesters
Store Rd., Hurdle Mills, who died Monday, Feb. 25, 2008 at Duke
University Medical Center, will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, Feb.
27, in Clement Baptist Church by the Rev. Lewis Wall and Dr. Ben
Gault. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Born in Randolph County, Mr. Staley was the son of the late Floyd
Eldon and Moleta Myrtle Needham Staley. His late children are William
Edward Staley Jr. and Betty Rachel Staley Pouget, and his late sister
was Joyce S. Hicks.
He was retired from Fred Long Electric Co. and later owned and
operated Bushy Fork Electric.
He was a member of Clement Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Hester Staley; a daughter, Sheila
Johnson of Gibsonville; two brothers, Floyd Eldon Staley Jr. of
Ramseur and Ricky J. Staley of Missouri; three sisters, Jewell S.
Brown of Asheboro, Peggy S. Threadgill of Ramseur and Karen S. Cox
of Asheboro; and two grandchildren, Matt Johnson and Nick Johnson.
Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service.

Almeter Walker
OXFORD The funeral for Almeter Walker, 91, of 9138 Amis
Chapel Rd., Oxford, who died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 at her home,
was conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24, in Blue Wing Baptist
Church by the Rev. Toney Smith. Burial was in the Blue Wing Memorial
Gardens.
Mrs. Walker was a native of Granville County.
She was a member of Blue Wing Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Joyce McFail of Oxford; three sons, Henry
Walker Jr. of Uniondale, N.Y., Arthur Walker of Durham and Bobby
Walker of Oxford; a brother, Otis D. Clark of Danville, Va.; seven
grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
