Jane C. Adcock
OXFORD A memorial funeral for Jane Currin Adcock, 85, of
Oxford, who died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at her home, was conducted
at 3 p.m. Friday, March 14, in Hester Baptist Church. Burial was
in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Adcock was a member of Hester Baptist Church and a graduate
of East Carolina College.
She taught at Helena School in Person County and at Tolar-Oak Hill
School in Granville County.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Anne Adcock Haskins and Cynthia
Adcock Bryant.

Van L. Carrington
HALIFAX, Va. The funeral for Van Lorenzo Carrington, 44,
of 1046 Marion Trail, Halifax, Va., who died Tuesday, March 11,
2008, at his home, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 17,
in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Claiborne. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Born May 18, 1963, in Halifax County, Mr. Carrington was the son
of Franklin Carrington of Nathalie, Va. and Rose Lee Carrington
of Halifax, Va., who survive. His late brother was James Thomas
McCraw.
He was employed with GKN in Roxboro and was a member of Pleasant
Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Lashell Garrett
of South Boston, Va.; three brothers, Alphsono Carrington of Halifax,
Larry Carrington of Omega, Va. and David Carrington of Chase City,
Va.; four sisters, Yvonne Acree of Nathalie, Va., Jenett (Jacqueline)
Carrington of South Boston, Maria Traynham and Denise Hamlett, both
of Scottsburg, Va.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at Jeffress
Funeral Home in South Boston and at other times at the home.
Virginia C. Gentry
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The funeral for Virginia Carver Gentry,
93, of Williamson Boulevard, Daytona Beach, Fla. , who died Saturday,
March 8, 2008, at the Hospice Care Center Port Orange, was conducted
at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, in the Dale Woodward Funeral Home chapel
by Chaplain Jim Smith, Jane Carver Dixon and Steve Mathis.
Mrs. Gentry was a native of South Boston, Va., the daughter of
the late Kathleen Estes and Samuel R. Whitten. Her late husbands
were James Carver and Osby Gentry. Her late daughter was Patricia
Dixon.
She spent much of her youth in Roxboro.
She was an active member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where
she sang in the choir and was director of Young People's Service
League.
She was also a former Little League basketball coach, Girl Scout
leader and member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine.
After moving to Daytona in 1960, she worked as assistant manager
in the ladies' sportswear department at Furchgott's Dept. Store
and later retired as manager of a restaurant at the Plaza Hotel.
Surviving are two daughters, Harriette Carver of Daytona Beach,
and Marjorie Hurst and husband, Richard, of Reno, Nev.; two sons,
James (Bud) Carver and wife, Emma, of Grove, Okla. and Capt. Lee
Carver of Port Orange, Fla.; a brother, Robert Whitten of Kodak,
Tenn.; three grandchildren, Pam Perry, Rachel Mathis and Bill Carver;
and four great-grandchildren.
Lindsay Harris
BURLINGTON The funeral for Lindsay Harris, 80, of 1008 Camden
St., Burlington, who died Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Hospice of
Alamance & Caswell, was conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March
12, in Union Chapel UCC by the Rev. Ervin E. Milton.
Mr. Harris was a native of Person County, the son of the late Henry
and Lillian Swan Harris. His late brothers were Walter, Ben Lee
and Ernest Harris.
He was a member of Greater Love World Outreach Non-denominational
Church of Burlington.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Harris; three sons, Ron Harris and
wife, Pat, of Mebane, Monroe Harris and wife, Beatrice and Lindsay
Harris and wife, Amy, all of Burlington; two daughters, Iris McDaniel
and husband, Gary Swann and Gloria McCauley and husband, Bill, all
of Burlington; two brothers, James Earl Harris and Clifton Harris,
both of Burlington; two sisters, Kathleen Goins of Burlington and
Katie Sue Haith of Green Level, NC; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-
grandchildren.??
Daniel C. Hightower
PROSPECT HILL The funeral for Daniel Clayton (Danny) Hightower,
53, of 377 Egypt Rd., who died Wednesday, March 12, 2008, at his
home, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, March 15, in the Brooks
& White Funeral Home chapel by Minister Ron Galloway. Burial
will be in the Hebron United Methodist Church Cemetery on Highway
119 S. in Hightowers Township.
Mr. Hightower was a native of Person County, the son of the late
Daniel Lorenza and Viola Sue Clayton Hightower. His late daughter
was Karen Galloway, and his late brothers were Lawrence, John Harvey
and Burley Hightower.
He was a truck driver.
Surviving are a son, Kevin Daniel Hightower of Danville, Va.; four
sisters, Carol McIntyre and Mary Grubb, both of Prospect Hill, Shirley
Denny of Leasburg and Anne Hunter of Chinquenpin; two brothers,
Donald Hightower of Prospect Hill and Hugh Hightower of Creedmoor;
and a grandchild, Ariana Galloway.
Pallbearers will be Chad Hightower, Chris Hightower, Travis Winstead,
Dale Blaylock, Isaac Smart and Gary Poteat.

Malcolm H. Hyler
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date for
Malcolm Hudson Hyler, 69, of 51 Lawrence Barker Rd., Semora, who
died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Veterans Hospital in Durham, following
a brief illness.
Born Dec. 23, 1938, in Milton, Mr. Hyler was the son of the late
Ardie Hudson and Ruby Barker Hyler. His late brothers were Ardie
(Bill) Hyler and James Hyler.
He was a 1956 graduate of Roxboro High School.
He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was employed with Colonial Stores and was retired from the Big
Star food chain in Danville, Va., where he was assistant manager
He was a member of Milton United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sisters, Roma Mathis of Andrews, and Hilda Hyler
of Danville; and two brothers, John Hyler of Swansboro and Don Hyler
of Concord.

Angela G. Long
HURDLE MILLS Angela Gail Long age 44 of 472 Broach Road
died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at Durham Regional Hospital. She
was born in Person County. Angela was a member of Five Forks Baptist
Church and a graduate of Person Senior High School.
Surviving are her husband, Larry Michael Mike Dixon
of the home; her parents Winfred Earl Wimp and Peggy
Porterfield Long; her daughter, Gabrielle Gabby Long
all of Hurdle Mills; her brother, Linwood Long and wife Deborah
of Hurdle Mills; her father-in-law, Larry Dixon of Roxboro; 2 brothers-in-law
Dave and his wife Penny Dixon of Roxboro and Jeff and Tammy Dixon
of Fisher, IN;
eight nieces and nephews, Jessica, Jonathan, Jenna, and Joseph
Long; Carrie, Jeffery, Jordan, and Jennifer Dixon.
The funeral service will be 2PM, Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Five
Forks Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Churchill and Rev. Tommy
Willis officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Robert Kerr, Dale Brown, Danny Brown, Wesley
Winstead, Steve Winstead, Mike Long, Danny Long, and Randall Long.
The family will receive friends 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, March
14, 2008 at Brooks & White Funeral Home and other times at the
home of her parents, Wimp and Peggy Long, 117 Snipes Road, Hurdle
Mills.

Warren D. Martin
BURLINGTON A memorial service for Warren David Martin, 79,
of 2309 Sweetbay Cir., Burlington, who died Monday, March 10, 2008,
at the Hospice Home following a brief illness, will be conducted
at 2 p.m. today, March 15, in Shiloh Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Martin was a native of Decatur, Ga., the son of the late Henry
Clay and Lola Berry Martin. His late brother was Gene Martin.
He worked at AT&T and retired from Lucent Technologies, after
36 years of service.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Carolyn Ashburn Martin; a daughter,
Peggy Tackett and husband, Jack Tackett, of Cary; three sons, W.
David Martin Jr. and wife, Cindy Crouse-Martin, of Raleigh, Thomas
Martin and wife, Helen, of Benton City, Wash. and Paul Martin and
wife, Angie, of Roxboro; and five grandchildren, Zachary Martin
of Raleigh, Rebecca and Alexander Martin of Roxboro, and Matthew
and Michael Tackett of Cary.
He was a member of Shiloh Presbyterian Church, having joined in
1961.
He was active in Boy Scout Troop 19 of Shiloh and a member of the
scout committee.
He was also a former president of the Alamance Wildlife Club and
was an instructor for the N.C. Wildlife Hunter Safety Course.
Visitation will immediately follow the service.

Marjorie D. Moore
MECKLENBURG The funeral for Marjorie (Margie) (Rastus) Dickerson
Moore, 84, of Cornelius, who died Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at her
home, was conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, March 13, in Mt. Zion United
Methodist Church of Cornelius. Burial was in the Burchwood Cemetery
in Roxboro.
Born Feb. 27, 1924, Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late Matt
and Evelyn Dickerson. Her late sister was Gladys Kirby.
She was a graduate of Roxboro High School and Louisburg College.
She worked as a secretary for Collins & Aikman and Ingersoll
Rand.
She was a long-time member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Lawrence (Red) Moore; a son Steve Moore
and wife, Lisa, of Cary; a daughter, Carol Lesley and husband, David,
of Salisbury; a sister Janie Long; five grandchildren, Evan Moore,
Heather Marteney, Jessica Page, Lauren Wagoner and Christen Lesley;
six great-grandchildren Kayla, Kirsten, Kaitlyn, and Mariah Marteney,
Austin Page and Haven Wagoner.
Cecil W. Oakley
The funeral for Cecil Wilkins Oakley, 95, formerly of 1284 Leasburg
Rd., who died Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Person Memorial Hospital
Extended Care Unit, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, March 15,
at Stories Creek Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Pete Hendrix.
Burial will be in the Oakley Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Oakley was daughter of the late Samuel Daniel Wilkins and
Lonie Painter Wilkins. Her late husband was Willie Everette Oakley.
She was retired from Fo-Acre Warehouse and was a member of Stories
Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are five children, Willie (Bo) Everette Oakley Jr. and
wife, Mary W., of Durham, Larry Daniel Oakley and wife, Janie, of
Clyde, Shirley O. Suitt, Jo O. Mooney and husband, Erval, all of
Roxboro and Carolyn O. Daniel and husband, Buddy, of Winston-Salem;
11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at the church for one hour before the service.
Pallbearers will be Keith Oakley, Brad Suitt, Jonathan Mooney,
Mark Daniel, Scott Jones, Mack Whittle, Gary Hecimovich and Christopher
Brement.

Mamie F. Thomas
HILLSIDE, N.J. The funeral for Mamie Fergus Thomas, 73,
of Hillside, N.J., who died Sunday, March 9, 2008, was conducted
in Irvington, N.J. at 11 a.m. Friday, March 14, in Solid Rock Baptist
Church. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside.
Mrs. Thomas was a native of Person County and a 1954 graduate of
Person County High School.
She was a retired from New York Life Insurance Co., for which she
was an underwriter and earned the prestigious Million Dollar Sales
award.
She was a member of New Ephesus Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Aaron Thomas Jr.; five sisters, Catherine
Cunningham of Alton, Va., Mary Wilson of Durham, Viola Brandon of
Philadelphia, Pa., Ossie Martin of Columbia, S.C. and Alice Mitchell
of Roxboro; four brothers, Robert Fergus of South Boston, Va., Bennie
Fergus of N.J., Willie Fergus of Alton and Shank Fergus of N.J.;
three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Betty C. Walker
The funeral for Betty Clayton Walker, 76, of 179 Ca-Vel Chub Lake
Rd., who died Friday, March 14, 2008 at her home, will be conducted
at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in the Brooks & White Funeral Home
chapel by the Rev. Herman Chambers. Burial will be in the Person
Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Walker was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Floyd and Lillian C. Clayton. Her late husband was Fred Lee
Walker. Her late siblings were Bobby Clayton and Frances Ellis.
She was retired from Collins & Aikman Corp., and she attended
McGhees Mill Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Marsha W. Bowes of Roxboro; a son, Freddie
Lee Walker and wife, Angela, of Leasburg; four grandchildren, Brian
Walker, Michelle Lewis, Sherry L. Nichols and Gary Lewis; five great-grandchildren,
Brandon Chambers, Kristin Chambers, Joseph Nichols, Skyler Walker
and Katelynn Chambers.
Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, March 15 at
the funeral home.

Ken McCormick Richard Osborne and Jeff Porterfield.

James Thomas Whitfield Sr.
The funeral for James Thomas Whitfield Sr. of Welch-Whitfield Rd.,
Timberlake, who died Friday, March 14, 2008, at the Veterans Administration
Hospital in Durham, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17,
in Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.

Vinicia Kay Chavious Wilkerson
The funeral for Vinicia Kay Chavious Wilkerson, 50, of Roxboro,
who died Thursday, March 6, 2008, was conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday,
March 13, in Mt. Bright Baptist Church. Burial was in the Jones
Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkerson was the daughter of Doris Jones Chavious, who survives.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband, William Wilkerson;
and three children, Latitia Chavious, Danielle Chavious and William
Wilkerson Jr.
