Jessie P. Bailey
The funeral for Jessie Pettiford Bailey, 88, of 1243 Dick Holeman
Rd., Timberlake, who died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 in Duke University
Medical Center, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, in
New Hope Person Baptist Church by the Rev. W.L. Richardson. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bailey was a member of New Hope Person Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Stacey B. Riley and husband, Richard,
of Durham; a son, Carlton Bailey of the home; a sister, Lottie Cameron
of Virginia; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, Dec. 29, at the
church.

Mentha L. Blalock
SUMRALL, Miss. The funeral for Mentha Lee (Mickey) Blalock,
78, of Sumrall, Miss. nd formerly of Gantt, Ala. and Person County,
who died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007 at her home, was conducted at 2
p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, in the Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home Sumrall
chapel in Hattiesburg, Miss. Burial was in 1st Baptist Church of
Sumrall Cemetery.
Mrs. Blalock was the daughter of the late Joe and Mary Harper Jr.
She was a homemaker and a member of 1st Baptist Church of Sumrall.
Surviving are her husband, William H. (Bill) Blalock; two daughters,
Vicki Daniel of Sumrall and Mari J. Bolton of Monroeville, Ala.;
five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to a church of choice.
Carolyn Z. Boswell
GRAHAM The funeral for Carolyn Zimmerman Boswell, 65, of
3410-B Hwy. 62 N., Burlington, who died Monday, Dec. 24, 2007 at
the White Oak Manor of Burlington following an extended illness,
was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in Union Ridge Church by
the Rev. Phil Hardy. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Boswell was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Guy Stanley and Anita Chisenhall Zimmerman. Her late son was
Steven Levi Boswell.
She was a homemaker and a member of Union Ridge Church.
Surviving are her husband, John Preston Boswell; three sons, Shawn
P. Boswell and wife, Rhonda, of Burlington, Jeffrey Boswell and
wife, Marcia, of Burlington, and Jason Boswell of Raleigh; six sisters,
Marie Schwartz of Orlando, Fla., Patsy Ashby of Durham, Elizabeth
Duncan of Roxboro, Kay Roberts of Burlington, Marsha Wilkins of
Durham and Kim Dunn of Roxboro; a brother, Stanley Zimmerman of
Greenville, S.C.; five grandchildren, Tyler, Courtney, Hayley, Jos
and Luc; and a great-grandchild, Addison.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
Daniel R. Cameron
A memorial service for Daniel Ross Cameron, 83, who died Friday,
Dec. 28, 2007 due to complications related to COPD, will be conducted
at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at First United Methodist
Church in Lenoir.
Born March 24, 1924 in Lee County, Mr. Cameron was the son of the
late Lenna Rosser and William John Cameron.
He was married 55 years to Jane Nowell of Hickory and has three
children, Jane Cameron Wagstaff of Roxboro, Daniel Ross Cameron
Jr. of Wilmington and Cannon Cameron of Orlando, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Drafted at age 18, he served in the Third Army during World War
II. After his service, he played basketball and graduated from Louisburg
College and attended North Carolina State University.
He was self-employed as a general contractor in Raleigh for 26
years, an active member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church,
and the Lions Club. He was a founding member of Clan Cameron of
North America, honoring his North Carolina Scottish heritage.

Macie E. Carver
The funeral for Macie Evie Carver, 90, formerly of Patterson Drive,
who died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 in the Roxboro Nursing Center,
will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 29, in the Brooks &
White Funeral Home chapel by the Rev. Barry Chambers and the Rev.
Stanley Carver. Burial will be in the Providence Cemetery.
Mrs. Carver was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Lem and Lonie Tingen Carver. Her late husband was Jessie Carver.
She was a member of Paschalls Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Carolyn Harris and Brenda Minnis,
both of Roxboro; a son, Stanley Carver of Roxboro; two sisters,
Pearlie Walker and Mabel Chambers, both of Roxboro; six grandchildren;
and five great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Gene Wolfe, Adam Carden, Dustin Carden, Richie
Harris, Ricky Carver, Ronnie Carver and Mike Walker.

John D. Clay
A memorial service for John D. Clay, 86, of 701 Patterson Drive,
who died Monday, Dec. 23, 2007 at Duke University Medical Center,
will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 29, in Quinns Chapel
A.M.E. Church by the Rev. Ben Clay.
Mr. Clay was a native of Person County.
He was a member of Quinns Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Surviving are two grandsons, Michael C. Clay of Albuquerque, N.M.
and Lawrence Shorty of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Linda Dawson
and Catherine Paylor; and a devoted companion, Ophelia Richardson
of Roxboro.

Freda W. Davis
A graveside funeral for Freda Walker (Freddie) Davis, 85, of 621
Ruff Davis Rd., who died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 at the home of her
son, Terry Davis, in Oxford, was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec.
24, in the Davis Family Cemetery on Ruff Davis Road by the Rev.
Martin Hall.
Mrs. Davis was the daughter of the late Samuel and Euphemia Rhew
Walker. Her late husband of 63 years was David Lewis (D.L.) Davis.
Her late sisters were Ruth W. Clayton, Clara W. Clayton and Edna
W. Oakley, and her late great-granddaughter was Ryan B. Davis.
She was a member of the Rock Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Terry W. Davis and wife, Ann, of Oxford
and Robert Bob Davis and wife, Susan, of Roxboro; a daughter, Gay
D. Chambers and husband, Nelson, of Roxboro; two sisters, Valinda
W. Slaughter and Bobbie Jean Clayton, both of Roxboro; five grandchildren,
Andy Davis, Jennifer Meeks, Mark Chambers, Emily Davis and Erin
Davis; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan Davis, Jackson Meeks,
Haylee Chambers and Amanda Chambers.
Pallbearers were Andy Davis, Ronald Long, Steve Meeks, Mitchell
Lowery, Reed Marston, James Donald Davis, Brent Bogue and and Urel
Gillis.
Michael Lowery and Paul Setzer served as honorary pallbearers.

Louise L. Day
The funeral for Louise Long Day, 98, of 231 Charles Cir., who died
Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007 in Person Memorial Hospital, will be conducted
at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 29, 2007 in Long Memorial United Methodist
Church by the Rev. T.R. Miller. Burial will be in the Burchwood
Cemetery.
Mrs. Day was a native of Person County, the daughter of the late
Charlie E. and Roxanne Phelps Long. Her late husband was Burlie
T. Day. Her late grandson was Burley Day III.
She was a long-time volunteer with the bloodmobile for many years
and had worked at Peebles Department Store. She also served as the
secretary/treasurer for the Roxboro Laundry Co.
She was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Burley Thomas (Tommy) Day Jr. and wife, Nancy,
of Roxboro; two grandchildren, J. Bradley Day and Kimberlyn Day,
both of Roxboro; and four great-grandchildren, McKendree Day, Barrett
Day, Mary Catherine Day and Leanna Day.
Pallbearers will be Lacy Brooks Long, Dan Hawkins, Darrell Moore,
Bruce Moore, Jimmy Edwards, Charles Edwards and Larry Oakley.
Bobby Long and Leon Long will be honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be in the Harris Fellowship Hall of the church
for one hour before the service.

Elnora Y. Dunn
SEMORA The funeral for Elnora Marie Yancey Dunn, 72, of
Semora, who died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2007 at the Brian Center in Yanceyville,
will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 29, in St. Mark Baptist
Church by the Rev. Herbert Pettiford. Burial will be in the church
cemetery.
Born on December 22, 1935, in Halifax County, Va., Mrs. Dunn was
the daughter of the late Ed and Victoria Jennings Yancey.
She was a member of St. Mark Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, John J. Dunn; a son, John Woody of South
Boston, Va.; two brothers, Henry Yancey of Alton, Va. and Alexander
Yancey of Baltimore, Md.; five sisters, Helen Goode and Betty Walton,
both of Roxboro, Susie Yancey, Mattie Harris and Lillie Williams,
all of Baltimore, Md.; and two granddaughters, Dominek Brandon and
Cheryl Woody.

Brenda W. Garner
The funeral for Brenda Kaye Whitt Garner, 62, of 66 Hagers
Ridge Rd., who died Wednesday, Dec. 26 at her home, was conducted
at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, in Antioch Baptist Church by the Rev.
David Chambers and the Rev. Herbert Brown. Burial was in the Person
Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Garner was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Eddie Carlton and Edna Lacks Whitt. Her late husband of 31
years was Alfred Ray Garner. Her late sister was Kathleen Whitt,
and her late brothers were James, Malcolm and Clyde Whitt.
She was retired from Northern Telecom and was a member of Antioch
Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Kimberly Garner Roberson and husband,
James, and Kendra Garner Pope and husband, David, all of Leasburg;
three brothers, Danny Whitt, Joe Whitt and Carlton Whitt; and two
grandchildren, Kaleb Pope and Kaitlyn Roberson.
Pallbearers were Kippy Blanks, Robbie Harris, William Paul, Adam
Rouse, Darrell Seamons and Keith Whitt.

Basil W. Garrett Jr.
NEW BERN A memorial service for Basil (Buck) Wilkerson Garrett
Jr., 64, of New Bern, who died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 at his home,
was conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, in the Wilkerson Funeral
Home chapel, Greenville.
Mr. Garrett was a native of Roxboro, the son of the late Basil
Wilkerson and Dorothy Reeves Garrett.
He attended Roxboro schools, East Carolina University and Croft
Business School in Durham.
For 25 years he was a tobacco buyer for J. P. Taylor Co.
For the past 12 years he had made his home in New Bern.
Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Sandra Porter Garrett; two
sons, Basil Todd Garrett and wife, Susan, and James Reeves Garrett,
all of Wilmington; a sister, Pet Garrett Spears of Roanoke Rapids;
and three grandchildren, Elle Alexandra Garrett and Basil Wilkerson
Garrett III and Johnathan Reeves Garrett.

Bryan M. Green
Bryan McNeil Green, 41, of 212 N. Main St., Suite 3A, died Tuesday,
Dec. 25, 2007 at Person Memorial Hospital.
Born in Person County, Mr. Green was the son of Juanita Short Green
of Roxboro, who survives, and the late Clyde Eugene Green.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was a member of Long Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving in addition to his mother is a brother, Gary Eugene Green
of Apex.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Linda F. Hatchett
The funeral for Linda Faye Hatchett, 54, who died Tuesday, Dec.
25, 2007 in Philadelphia, Pa., will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday,
Dec. 30, in Cedar Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jesse Timberlake.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Ms. Hatchett was a native of Person County.
Surviving are two daughters, Camisha Winstead of Durham and Kalisha
Hatchett of Philadelphia; a son, Malik Hatchett of Philadelphia;
six sisters, Hilda H. Crawley of Semora, Kathleen Riley, Babbie
H. Williams, Vanessa H. Rogers and Iris Gunn, all of Durham, and
Tracey Hatchett of Roxboro; four brothers, Robbin O. Hatchett of
Manassas, Va., Dennis Hatchett, Danny Hatchett and Kerry Hatchett,
all of Roxboro; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 29, at Cunningham
and Nelson Funeral Home.
Lelia P. Pennington
The funeral for Lelia Frances Painter Pennington of Timberlake
who died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday,
Dec. 30, in Helena Primitive Baptist Church by Elder David Minter,
Steve Chandler and Pastor Jack Moody. Burial will be in the Painter
Family Cemetery.
Born in Person County, Mrs. Pennington was the daughter of the
late Weldon and Roxie Long Painter. Her late husband was Clifton
Pennington.
She was a homemaker and a member of Helena Primitive Baptist Church,
where she served as church secretary and treasurer for many years.
Surviving are two daughters, Lois Fergerson and husband, Julian,
of Raleigh and Betty Harris and husband, Donald, of Prospect Hill;
a sister, Pauline P. Cash of Timberlake; five grandchildren, David
William Howerton, Stephen Clifton Howerton, Jason Lee Howerton,
Teresa Griffin and Deborah Snow; four step-grandchildren; eight
great-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be nephews Richard Cash, Curtis Cash, Billy Painter,
Brad Dunn, Danny Painter and Bobby Painter.
Jerry Painter and Roger Dunn will be honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today, Dec. 29, at
Brooks & White Funeral Home.

Nellie S. Pixley
The funeral for Nellie Sue Satterfield Pixley, 76, formerly of
Boston Road, who died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 at the Roxboro Nursing
Center, was conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, in Mill Creek Baptist
Church by the Rev. Brian Hager and the Rev. Tommy Robertson. Burial
was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Pixley was a native of Person County, the daughter of the
late Cable and Sadie Russell Satterfield. Her late husband was Linwood
C. Pixley.
She was a former employee of Peebles Department store and was retired
from Wal-Mart.
She was a member of Mill Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son Gary Pixley and wife, Connie, of Roxboro; a
sister, Jean Tolley of Raleigh; and a grandson, Joseph Pixley of
Raleigh.

James R. Ruffin
The funeral for James Robert Ruffin, 83, formerly of Roxboro, who
died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Dec.
29, in the Hester, Whitted & Daye Funeral Home chapel. Burial
will be in the Lawson Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Corean Smith Ruffin; four children, Gwenevere
Lete Ruffin of Decatur, Ga., Sheri Denise Ruffin of Bronx, N.Y.,
Kevin Aundre Ruffin of Scotch Plains, N.J., and Chelsey James Ruffin
of Medford Long Island, N.Y.; a brother, Charles Ruffin of Conyers,
Ga.; four sisters, Gladys Lea Brown of Stone Mt., Ga, Juanita Reese
of Atlanta, Ga., Christine Rayner of Plantation, Fla. and Bertie
Mae Mullins of Piscataway, N.J.; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
